SmartStart reveal the most popular baby names of 2019

10 January 2020 by Catalyst IT Europe

SmartStart annually collects and presents the most popular baby names. The most popular names, for 2019, were Amelia and Oliver, while Mia and Nikau were the most popular Māori names.

Gretta Seebeck, from the Catalyst DIA Services team, said: “It has been fantastic to host the most popular baby names on SmartStart for the last four years; it always creates a buzz around the office as the data rolls in and we try to predict which baby names will be most popular.”

There are some new additions to the most popular girls names, Willow and Mila and there are some new popular Māori names, Taika and Rawiri for boys and Tui and Ataahua for girls.

Since 2011, Amelia has been amongst the top ten, repeatedly losing out to Charlotte, who has been topping the board since 2013. However, 2019 was Amelia’s year – finally taking the spotlight from Charlotte. And still, after seven years, Oliver remains the most popular name for boys, with Noah not far behind.

Sophie and Ruby have made a re-appearance, and they are in good company as Thomas and Charlie have also reappeared in the boys’ top 10 popular names list.
